“Xtortion” (pronounced “Christortion”) is an original satirical caricature by artist rek, exploring how the image of Jesus and his teachings have been distorted, reinterpreted, and reshaped over centuries. Originally created for an exhibition of religious art at the original rek Gallery, “Xtortion” became part of a continuing series of prints after the original artwork was sold. The image now finds another expression as wearable art.

Over centuries, the teachings and image of Jesus have been interpreted, reinterpreted, appropriated, and sometimes manipulated to serve purposes far removed from their original intent. “Xtortion” explores that tension through an exaggerated, expressive portrait that is both humorous and unsettling.

With his crown of thorns, weary expression, and dramatically distorted features, the figure becomes a visual metaphor for the centuries of competing interpretations imposed upon him.
